Food & Nutrition Magazine recently put out a great challenge, asking people to tweak their Coconut and Date Protein Bites recipe. We loved the idea of creating an on-the-go snack that packed a protein punch!
So, we made a new Whey Protein Institute recipe. It was a tad difficult to form stable bites with the old recipe, which we fixed in our own recipe by increasing yogurt from 1/4th cup to a full 5.3 oz. container. The yogurt acted as more of an adhesive to keep the formed bites together. The coconut really lent itself to a lot of different approaches and we felt as though we could increase the protein content by adding some form of flavored whey protein isolate. We landed on BiPro chocolate whey protein isolate, while adding 2 tbsp of cocoa. BiPro is one of several high-quality protein powders that we recommend on our Powders & Supplements page.
From a nutritional standpoint, how beneficial was adding whey protein isolate to our recipe? Let’s break it down:
The 12 grams contained in two of the coconut bites means that our recipe is an “excellent source of protein,” because it contains at least 20% of your daily value for protein.
Using the same logic, the bites are now also an excellent source of fiber, with recommended intakes ranging anywhere between 14-33g per day, depending on your age and sex, according to the 2015 Dietary Guidelines.
With the nutrition facts label changing in July of 2018, it’s important to note that our recipe had 0g of added sugar, with plenty of sweetness occurring naturally from both the dates and the coconut. Find out more about how the nutrition facts label is changing here.
Keep checking back to our blog as we will be regularly tackling nutrition challenges as well as becoming more active in the protein world, providing evidence-based science behind protein and all of its benefits. If you want to try out our protein bites, the protein recipe is below:
